"My foot looks
like a foot again," says a recent patient after
undergoing an advanced bunion procedure. "After
surgery, the toes straightened out and the bump
was gone. It looks normal, feels normal, acts
normal...it's a normal foot!"
Bunions are the enlargements of the great toe joint
area caused by a misaligned bone that pushes the
big toe inward. If one has ever suffered from this
condition, or knows someone who has, he or she
is aware of the inconvenience and pain that a bunion
can cause. Bunions affect one out of every six
persons, and women are more commonly affected than
men. Children may suffer from bunions as well.
"Many patients will go through 3 or 4 pairs of
shoes without ever finding a pair that fits comfortably;"
says Beth Klawitter: "Over time, the bunion actually
gets worse and they must decide to see a podiatrist
or suffer needlessly."
Once the bunion process begins, every step causes
further destruction of the joint. Because of this
progressive nature, a bunion may have several
different stages. Thankfully, there is a procedure
that can correct the big toe joint during many
stages of the condition.
Using a unique and successful procedure for correcting
bunions, the enlarged joint behind the first toe
is straightened out. This process can be accomplished
through minimal incision surgery. The bunion is
corrected through small incisions and most often
no sutures are necessary.
Drs. Meinhold and Klawitter make every effort to
communicate state-of-the-art options to their patients,
and has found the procedure to be covered by most
insurance plans. To learn more about conditions
